Mesa County Public Health Offers Guidance in Light of Cyclospora Outbreak

Regional Situation

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) is investigating an outbreak of Cyclospora on the Western Slope. According to CDPHE, 62 cases have been reported as of June 15. Approximately 45 of those cases have been linked to a restaurant in Ridgeway called Tacos del GNAR. 

There is an online survey CDPHE is asking people to take if they have eaten at the restaurant since May 1, 2023. It will help with the outbreak investigation and can be completed whether or not the person experienced symptoms.

Cyclospora Background

Cyclospora is a parasite that can make people sick after eating or drinking something that is contaminated. Symptoms can include diarrhea, loss of appetite, stomach cramps and pain, increased gas, nausea, fatigue, and other flu-like symptoms. The illness is typically treated with antibiotics.

Mesa County Public Health Support for Foodborne Illness

Mesa County Public Health (MCPH) is responsible for investigating public health complaints involving restaurants. Foodborne illness is investigated by an expert on our team. Although anonymous complaints will be investigated, contact information for the complainant is strongly encouraged.

Once we receive a complaint from a concerned community member, someone from our team contacts them to gather additional information. We work to make sure these complaints are responded to quickly. An on-site inspection may be conducted with the goal to put preventative controls into place to prevent future possible illness. Our Disease Surveillance team will take the lead if someone has a reportable illness or two or more individuals become sick.
