Mesa County Department of Human Services (MCDHS) received nearly 2,500 referrals of abuse, neglect and exploitation of our adult population in 2023 alone. Many of these individuals are dependent on others for their care and are more susceptible to mistreatment. MCDHS joins the nation in recognizing June as Adult Protection Awareness Month and reminds us of our responsibility to ensure the health, safety and well-being of all at-risk adults.

In honor of Adult Protection Awareness Month, MCDHS staff will tie purple ribbons around the trees on the Community Services Building campus. The color purple represents the problem of elder abuse around the world; wearing purple or decorating with it is one way to bring awareness to our mission of protecting those who are unable to protect themselves

“We encourage everyone to call the confidential Adult Protection Hotline and report suspected neglect, abuse and exploitation of at-risk adults,” says MCDHS Adult Protection Manager Shannon Hardy. “The goal of Mesa County Adult Protective Services is to ensure the safety of at-risk adults and implement the least restrictive services to prevent future mistreatment.”

MCDHS is committed to advocating for the rights of our vulnerable populations. Senior citizens and persons with disabilities are vital members of our families, our community and our society.
