At their Oct. 8 public hearing, the Mesa County Commissioners approved an agreement with Short Elliott Hendrickson Inc. for $156,757 to design the 22 ½ Road and Greenbelt Drive Sidewalk and Drainage Improvements Project. This project is a vital investment to improve pedestrian safety, universal accessibility, and stormwater infrastructure in the area, especially for students and families accessing Broadway Elementary School.

The project will bring a new, ADA-compliant, ten-foot-wide detached concrete sidewalk along the west side of 22 ½ Road, replacing the existing asphalt path. This sidewalk will extend from CO Highway 340 to the north property line of Broadway Elementary, enhancing access to the school. A mid-block crosswalk across 22 ½ Road will also be installed to connect Broadway Elementary to Greenbelt Drive.

Additionally, the project includes significant stormwater drainage improvements. Crews will install approximately 450 feet of new storm drainpipe along 22 ½ Road and 475 feet along Greenbelt Drive, tying into the existing stormwater system. New curb and gutter systems, curb ramps, and valley pans will improve accessibility and functionality at key points, such as Pine Terrace and Milena Way.

One of the project's most important aspects is ensuring safety and compliance with modern standards. The improvements will provide a safe, walkable environment for students, families, and pedestrians traveling to Broadway Elementary while also enhancing drainage to prevent flooding and erosion.

Residents are encouraged to follow Mesa County’s social media channels for updates on the project.
