9-Hole Disc Golf Course Opens at Clifton Nature Park
Disc golf enthusiasts and community members, Mesa County is excited to announce the development of a 9-hole disc golf course — The Ponds — at the Clifton Nature Park, 3227 D Road, designed to turn the page on the past misuse and environmental hazards at the park and embrace more opportunities for safe outdoor recreation spaces in our community.
The idea to create the disc golf course came from one of our Mesa County Sheriff's Office deputies, who had previously witnessed environmental hazards due to trash, human waste, and needles and thought of a way to turn the issue into an opportunity to encourage outdoor recreation while maintaining and preserving open spaces.
The new course aims to protect the community's environment and public spaces in response to the approximately $13,000 spent on clean-ups in that area in the past year.
Mesa County Community Development, Public Works, and Road and Bridge departments assisted in developing the disc golf course. However, many community members offered weekly volunteer services and were the most crucial contributors — Russ Hamilton and Josh Miller led the project to ensure the integration of community feedback.
Financial support for the park's development, estimated at around $9,000, comes from a $2,000 mini-grant from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and collaboration with local Clifton businesses.
Before the park's development, the Mesa County Behavioral Health team interviewed the camp occupants, provided water, and offered resources to help transition away from the area.
The new disc golf course is a testament to what can be achieved when individuals and organizations come together with a shared vision for a safer and environmentally responsible future.
We look forward to the enjoyment and the continued preservation of our natural spaces, making Mesa County an even better place to live and play.
