Amidst this summer's relentless heat waves, ensuring our dogs are well cared for is vital. Sidewalks, pavement, and trails can quickly heat up enough to become harmful for your furry friend to walk on, and we must take measures to keep them safe and comfortable.

Leaving your pups at home is generally the best practice as temperatures rise and stay high throughout the day. Taking your dog on outings in the summer can lead to injuries such as burns and blisters on their paws or even contribute to canine heatstroke.

So, how do you know when taking your dog on a walk is a good idea?

Place your hand or bare foot flat on the ground for 10 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog to walk on.

If you plan to bring your dog along for your adventures this summer, you can try taking it on walks early in the morning or late in the evening when the heat has subsided, walking in a well-shaded grassy area, or purchasing a pair of dog booties.

Thank you for being a responsible pet owner and protecting your dog’s paws from hot ground.
